Dear Staff and Families,

This letter is to inform you that we have been informed of twenty-four (24) positive case/s of COVID-19 associated with the Waterville Junior High this week. This count includes home tests that have been reported to the school and any individuals who may or may not have been present in the school when they tested positive. This will not impact our school schedule and school will resume as normal for all other students.

Due to the health and privacy rights of the individual/s who tested positive, we will not be releasing the name/s of positive individuals. Current Maine CDC/DOE guidelines do not require schools to contact trace.

The safety of our staff and students is our top priority. When numbers of COVID cases are high, we encourage all students and staff to wear a mask at school. Regardless of case count, masks are always permitted. We encourage you and your family to wear a mask, practice social distancing, wash your hands often and stay home if sick. If your child develops symptoms of COVID-19, keep your child home, test for COVID-19, inform the school, and call a healthcare provider for questions or concerns about your child’s symptoms.

To help with identifying positive cases, I encourage all families to order FREE at-home COVID-19 test kits through this website: special.usps.com/testkits. It is important that we quickly identify and isolate possible cases to help keep our school community safe.

Good afternoon all, I thought it might be wise to let you know a bit more about unmasking tomorrow and the schools' protocols for this. I know most of you are very happy we have gotten to this point after two years. It has been a long haul for everyone but...we still need to follow normal mitigation strategies like frequent hand washing and distancing when possible. Also please know that:

Thank you for your time to listen to this message and let's all hope that we have a great spring enjoying the things we all love about warmer weather and the ability to get outside without freezing. Spring in Maine is like a rebirth of life and I think we will all appreciate that even more this year.

As always,

Eric

This letter is to inform you that we have been informed of fourteen (14) positive case/s of COVID-19 associated with the Waterville Junior High this week.

Current Maine CDC/DOE guidelines do not require schools to contact trace because our school follows a mask mandate policy.

The safety of our staff and students is our top priority.

Jessica Maguire (WJHS School Nurse) is available to answer health-related questions you might have. You may reach her by email at jmaguire@aos92.org. For questions pertaining to the operation of the school, please reach out to me at droux@aos92.org or by calling 873-2144.

Sincerely,

Access to free COVID-19 tests

Dear parents and Guardians,

Right now you can order free Covid-19 tests to be sent directly to your home from the US Federal Government. The process is quick and easy and they come pretty quickly! I ordered mine on Jan 18th and the tests were delivered by the US Post Office on Jan 26th. Click on the link below and you will be taken to the site.

If you have private insurance check with your health insurance company to see if they provide tests too, many do and they are free of charge delivered to your home.

Dear Staff, Students, and Families,

This letter is to inform you that between the dates of January 3rd and January 18th, our school has learned of 15 individuals testing positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).  We are informing you out of an abundance of caution.

Melanie Lecours, our school nurse, has been in contact with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the individuals who have tested positive.  These cases do not impact our school schedule and due to the health and privacy rights of the individuals who tested positive, we will not be releasing their names. We are following the Maine DOE (Department of Education) and CDC (Center for Disease Control) protocols for contact tracing.

The safety of our students and staff is our top priority.  Maine CDC recommends prevention measures to minimize the spread of COVID-19. These measures include proper handwashing with soap and warm water; use of an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol when soap and water is not available, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands; avoid close contact with people who are sick; stay home while you are sick and avoid close contact with others; wear a well-fitting mask in public indoor spaces, especially if you are not vaccinated; get a COVID-19 vaccine and COVID-19 booster when it is available to you; and when in public, avoid social distances of less than 6 feet and direct physical contact.

Melanie Lecours is available to answer health related questions you might have. You may reach her by email at mlecours@aos92.org.

Parents/Guardians of Waterville Public School students:

You may have seen on the news yesterday that the Maine CDC/Maine Department of Education once again updated their guidance for how to respond to COVID-19 cases in our schools. The change I want to make sure you are aware of is that contact tracing is no longer required in schools. Below is a portion of the interview with Dr. Shah about this topic.

Dr. Nirav Shah, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said the new reality of the pandemic was behind the decision to stop requiring schools to identify and contact people potentially exposed to an infected person. Shah said the omicron variant may be three times more contagious than delta, which was already more transmissible than earlier variants. And research suggests that infected people become contagious more quickly, often before symptoms emerge.

"In short, trying to catch omicron by contact tracing is like trying to catch a bullet train on a bicycle," Shah said during his weekly COVID briefing. "The train is long gone from the station by the time you even get your helmet on. The train accelerates far too quickly, it reaches much higher top speeds and it doesn't stop."

With the omicron variant now dominant throughout Maine, Shah said it is increasingly unlikely that school contact tracers could even reach a potentially exposed student before they become infectious, Contact tracing is also time consuming and labor intensive, and in schools the burden has largely been shouldered by nurses who are already consumed by COVID testing, advising, reporting and myriad other tasks.

The School Nurses request to parents is this:

Thank you all for being so understanding about the changes. I will continue to send regular updates, and as always, if you have questions you can reach out to your student's principal, their nurse or to me. Sincerely,

Eric L Haley
Superintendent of schools

Nurse Jean Cote has been in contact with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as the individual who tested positive.  All close contacts to the person who tested positive, have been notified directly.  These individuals must quarantine for 10 days beginning on the last day they had contact with the person who recently tested positive, and continue to monitor themselves for an additional 4 days.  While some people do need to quarantine, many individuals did not have to quarantine due to the fact that they were fully vaccinated and are symptom free.

Unfortunately, the last two COVID cases associated with our school involved people that were experiencing symptoms yet still came to school.  Please stay home when not feeling well so that we can safeguard our students and staff.   Don't assume symptoms are "just a cold".    We want to keep our students and staff healthy and in school, so please monitor yourself and stay home if you have symptoms.

This message is intended for Waterville Public Schools students, families and staff regarding Waterville Public Schools Return to School/Work Plan for school year 2021/22.

Good afternoon all, I hope you are all safe and enjoying the summer break.

I want you all to know that Waterville Public Schools is committed to getting all students back to in-person learning every day this coming school year. Having said that though, we have to be able to do this while still keeping staff and students safe. After a summer of discussing proper protocol and watching what has been happening with the Delta Variant being so contagious we have settled on the following protocols.

For more complete information please go to the Waterville Public Schools website and click on the banner for School Health and Safety page (yellow banner at top of page) This has totally updated for the start of this school year.

Have a great finish to your summer break. Looking forward to starting another year with everyone here every day.

Dear staff and families,

Each year many families use school vacation weeks opportunities for travel, but at this time such travel brings with it additional risks for contracting and transmitting COVID-19, according to the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC). It is critically important that our school communities continue to do everything we can in order to keep our schools safe, open, and able to provide in-person instruction.

The US CDC has issued strong guidance to the American people to continue to limit our interactions and travel at this time.

We encourage our staff and families to know the risks and the requirements for travel, and to communicate with our school leaders if you are travelling so that our schools can continue to operate safely.

In accordance with Maine travel guidelines and WPS district guidelines any staff or student who travels within the US to any state other than New Hampshire or Vermont (no restrictions as of 2/08/21 for these two states only), they will be required to either:

1. Complete a 10-day quarantine upon arrival in Maine and continue to monitor for signs and symptoms for an additional 4 days OR

2. Obtain and receive a negative COVID-19 antigen or molecular (PCR, NAAT, or isothermal) test result 72 hours after returning back into Maine to forgo the 10-day quarantine.

a. Students or staff may be tested 72 hours after arrival in Maine but must quarantine while they wait for test results. A negative COVID-19 antigen or molecular (PCR, NAAT, or isothermal) test result will allow the traveler to leave quarantine early.

CDC has also provided guidance as it relates to international travel. The current risk assessment level for COVID-19 is at 4, or VERY HIGH, for nearly every country. You can review the risk levels by country.

At this time, all air passengers coming to the United States, including U.S. citizens, are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before boarding a flight back to in the United States. See Frequently Asked Questions about this requirement for more information.

Upon return to the United States, staff and students must quarantine. International travelers can return to school after they:

1. Get tested 3-5 days after travel, and receive a negative test result AND stay home and self quarantine for 7 days after travel.

 2. Do not get tested and stay home for 10 days after travel.

3. Avoid being around people who are at increased risk for severe illness for 14 days, whether you get tested or not.

Any staff or students who have traveled internationally will not be permitted inside the school building for a minimum of 7 days, even if a negative test has occurred. Returning to work or school after travel is not dependent on the length of time spent within the restricted states or other countries, meaning that a day visit still requires any person to quarantine and/or test as described above. All members of the household who travel must test or quarantine if over 12 months old.

Any person who is quarantining should stay home, and not have in-person contact with others unless there is an emergency. Please continue to follow best practice safety protocols: wear a mask, keep physical distance, wash your hands and monitor for symptoms, and help protect our schools and neighbors.

Best,

Eric Haley

January 20, 2021 - 9am

Good morning everyone, I hope this email and or robo call finds you and yours doing well and keeping up your spirits in this long grind we have been on since early March of 2020. Hang in there we will get through this by working together and taking care of each other.

I wanted to notify you that after Lead Nurse Melanie Lecours and I discussed the discrepancy between the length of time the CDC is now recommending for quarantine (10 symptom free days) versus Waterville Public Schools (14 symptom free days) we decided that Melanie would have a discussion with our medical director (Dr. Dias) and bring that conversation to the administrative meeting held yesterday afternoon. Melanie reported that Dr. Dias recommended we align our quarantine days with the CDC to avoid confusion for our parents and staff. The administrators agreed and thus from this point forward we will be using 10 days as our official quarantine time.

Our on-line handbook is being updated with this change and should be out today so it might be helpful for everyone to review that information again just to get a bit more familiar with its contents.

Our most recent daily infections have slowed in Maine and also in the nation for the past few days and we are all hoping that might indicate we are over the worst of it but that might be my optimistic outlook getting in the way of reality but we can still hope.

Stay well my friends.

Dear Waterville Public Schools Staff, Students, and Families;

As the holiday season approaches, I wanted to reach out to all of you on behalf of the entire faculty and staff of Waterville Public Schools to thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation as we navigated our way through the first four months of school. Our staff and students have demonstrated together that we can be in school safely provided that we all follow the recommended guidelines for face coverings, social distancing, and being proactive in our response to symptoms in school and at home.

These measures will be of particular importance as we prepare to celebrate with family and friends. As such, I wanted to share the latest information available regarding out-of-state travel so that it may guide your choices over the next few weeks. Maine residents that travel beyond our state border are required to quarantine for a period of 14 days OR have a negative Covid-19 test at least 72 hours after returning to Maine. Currently, Vermont and New Hampshire are exempt from any quarantine or testing requirements, so Maine residents may travel freely between those states.

To ensure the health and safety of our staff and students upon our return to school, I am asking that families with plans to travel out-of-state to contact your School Nurse(s). The School Nurse will assist in developing a Return-to-School plan that minimizes the time that a staff member or student misses after traveling. We appreciate as much notice as you can provide and your communication if plans change or if someone at home develops symptoms over the break.

There is no higher priority for Waterville Public Schools than the health and safety of our staff and students. I appreciate your continued commitment to these common sense strategies to mitigate the transmission of Covid-19:

Self-screen every day and stay home if exhibiting any cold/flu-like symptoms

Communicate with the School Nurse about illness and potential contacts with others with symptoms or that test positive for Covid-19

Wear a mask/face covering over the mouth/nose and stay socially-distanced when in public or when interacting with others that are not in your immediate family

Please contact a school administrator or one of our School Nurses if you have any questions or concerns. I offer my best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season to you and yours.

Sincerely,

Mr. Eric HaleySuperintendent of Schools

November 24, 2020 - 9am

Good morning everyone, unfortunately on this day before the Thanksgiving Break I need to notify you that we have had a positive test for Covid 19 at the high school by a substitute worker who had an exposure (within six feet of each other for 15 minutes or more) to two other employees. Everyone involved has been notified and is following proper guidelines to quarantine. They are quarantined for 14 days. As best as we can determine, by interviewing all involved, this is the extent of the exposure. Let me repeat this in another way. There was no exposure to other staff or students. I am writing this to you not because I am concerned about anybody's else's health at this point but because I know how fast rumors and misinformation can spread in this day of immediate communication with the use of technology and I want you to have the facts concerning this situation.

November 12, 2020 - Noon

Good afternoon everyone. With the beginnings of two of our more family oriented school breaks on the horizon I thought it might be wise to speak to that situation before we get into the throes of it. Obviously I can’t tell you what to do during these breaks but I do expect you to be available for work on the first day back from each school vacation e.g.  Monday, November 30, 2020, and Thursday, January 4, 2021.

Reminder

As the covid-19 pandemic is getting worse in the world, our country, the state, and in our county, I wanted to remind everyone to strictly follow all guidelines and safety procedures that have been laid out by the Department of Education, the Governor’s Office and the CDC. It is our best weapon against this scourge we are fighting at home and around the world. No one wants to be the next place that is hit with an outbreak because we were not following the guidelines or not strictly enforcing them with our staff.

Out of state travel for emergency reasons

As part of this message I want you also to know that we are strongly recommending you not travel to states that are not listed by the Governors Executive Order as safe to travel and return from without having to take a covid-19 test and quarantine. If you have to travel to these “restricted” states because of a family emergency or other necessary business you will be required to quarantine for 14 days unless you agree to have a covid-19 test 72 hours after you return to Maine and the results are negative.  Up to 10 missed days would be paid days out of the Families First Act. Any days beyond these ten would then be your sick days and/or vacation days being used to cover.

Out of State Travel for enjoyment/vacation

Again we strongly urge you not to travel into “restricted” states. If you do, you will be required to quarantine for 14 days unless you agree to have a covid – 19 test 72 hours after you return to Maine and the results are negative. Your own sick days and/or vacation days would be used to cover this absence. In other words you would not be eligible for Families First Act days because you traveled into an exempt state by choice. Again I can’t tell you what to do during your school vacation but I do expect you to be ready and available for the first day of work when school re-opens.

Snow Days

As most of you know, we had planned on not having snow days this year but to convert them to remote learning days. However, after giving that idea a thorough vetting we have decided against it. We are now planning on using snow days the way we  have always used snow days – as a day off from school, both in-person and remote and making the day up, if we have to at the end of the  school year.

Thank you

Lastly, I end this message with my heartfelt thanks for these past 8 months of effort you have given this school system. We shut the norm down on a Sunday afternoon and you were expected to be game ready Monday morning for remote learning. You have risen to the task and gotten so much better along the way. You put your heart and soul into improving and making sure that the quality of the education our students were/are getting is of significant value and worthy of our Waterville Diploma. You deserve some much needed rest and relaxation but please stay safe and come back to us re-energized.

September 11, 2020 - 3pm

Good afternoon parents. I hope this message finds you and yours safe and healthy.

I wanted to let you know about a tremendous opportunity for our students, your children, in regards to school meals.  The USDA Extended Free Meals for Kids Through December 31, 2020.  This unprecedented move will help ensure – no matter what the situation is on-the-ground – children have access to nutritious food as the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

As our schools reopen and people return to work, it remains critical our children continue to receive safe, healthy, and nutritious meals.  All children will be able to obtain breakfast and lunches at no cost to you from now until December 31, 2020 or until funds are depleted.  For this reason, it is equally important the lunch applications that were sent home be filled out and returned to your child’s school because when this program ends, we will revert back to lunch application eligibility.

Besides receiving free meals (breakfast and lunch) at school, our plan is to also hand out a free breakfast and lunch at the end of each school day for your child’s next day on-line education.

For those of you in Cohort C, (total on-line education), you may call your school and arrange for curb-side pick-up for two days of meals.  , In the not so distant future, we hope to have home delivery of meals for Cohort C only.

June 3, 2020 - 5pm - Good afternoon everyone, I hope this message finds you and yours doing well and staying safe. This has been an extremely hard couple of months for all of us but with the coming of summer I hope we see nothing but sunnier days ahead!

I wanted to apprise you of a change to the summer meals program starting this coming Monday,  June 8th, 2020. Instead of the meals being delivered by bus along their routes we will have sites within the city where meals can be picked up. We have posted a flyer outlining where the sites are and approximately what time serving will take place at each site here.  There has been some relaxation of the normal summer meals rules such that we will still be able to allow you to take the meals home once you pick them up and you may ask for as many meals as you need for anyone 18 years old and under, no questions asked. Take care of each other.

May 21, 2020 - 11am - Good morning all, I hope this message finds each of you and your families doing well and enjoying the beautiful weather we are experiencing right now. We are changing the food service delivery schedule next week  because Monday, May 25 is a holiday. We will change from Monday/Wednesday/Friday to Tuesday/Thursday for this week only. Tomorrow, Friday, May 22, 2020, we will deliver meals for Friday, Saturday and Monday. Next Tuesday, May 26 we will serve meals for Tuesday and Wednesday and next Thursday, May 28, 2020, we will deliver meals for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Monday, June 1, 2020  we will go back to our normal Monday/Wednesday/Friday delivery schedule.

April 13, 2020 - 3pm - Good afternoon all, I hope this message finds you and yours well and doing okay with the stay at home order. I know that tree branches laden with heavy wet snow crashing to the ground and taking out power lines didn't help matters so I hope you got through that without too much hassle as well.

After consultation with the School Board Chair, Joan Phillips-Sandy, and a week-end of thinking about the issues around continuing remote learning for the rest of this school year, I think it is time to say, yes,  we are going to continue remote learning through the end of this school year unless we receive notice from the CDC that it is safe to re-open our school buildings. Hopefully this will give each of you a better idea of what to plan for and how long to plan it for. Obviously that means we (the school) have a lot of planning to do as well and will keep you informed as decisions are made.

On another note, I also wanted to inform you that during the week that was going to be our April break, April 20th through 24th,  we are changing the food service delivery schedule because Monday, April 20 is a holiday. We will change from Monday/Wednesday/Friday to Tuesday/Thursday for this week only. This Friday, April 17,  we will deliver meals for Friday, Saturday and Monday. Next Tuesday, April 21st we will serve meals for Tuesday and Wednesday and next Thursday, April 23rd,  we will deliver meals for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The week of April 27 we will go back to our normal Monday/Wednesday/Friday delivery schedule.

April 7, 2020 - 3pm - Good afternoon or early evening parents,

At the Board of Education meeting last night I asked the Board to cancel the April vacation (April 21, 22, 23 and 24) and the May 22 professional development day and to convert all five days to seat days. In return for this change we would shorten the end of the school year by four days (we need one day to cover the extra snow day we used on February 13, 2020) The Board unanimously voted to change the 2019/20 school calendar to reflect these two changes. In return school for students will end on June 10, 2020 and school for staff will end on June 11, 2020. I polled the staff for their opinion on doing this before approaching the Board and over 97% of them supported this change. In a nutshell their reasoning for supporting this change came in three avenues, 1) this change would allow us to continue feeding the children through what was supposed to be the April break, 2) we have just gotten the momentum going for on-line learning and it would be too bad to all of a sudden stop it and have to re-start. They felt you and your children, our students,  were just getting into a schedule and it was starting to "fit", and 3) the change would de facto give you as a family and them as a teacher to have more time off in June when perhaps some of the restrictions, both we have imposed on ourselves and mandated via the state of Maine might be lessened and would afford everyone a better chance to use vacation for what it is meant to be used for, sharing time with friends, enjoying time with distant family members and celebrating family birthdays, anniversaries and the like.

Now the thanks, many of you have taken the time to send us an email or call regarding our plans for on-line learning, some of these correspondences have been positive and some have been constructive criticism, all have been heartfelt and sincere in regards to how this is effecting you and or your children. I want to thank each and everyone of you that took the time to let us know how it felt to be on the receiving line of our messages and plans. Do know that we take all such correspondence very seriously and we are virtually meeting as an administrative team every week and tweaking our plans and improving consistency between our five school buildings (MMTC included) based on what the principals are hearing and information you have provided us. Please continue to inform us of  how things are going on the receiving line and don't hesitate to ask for help. We have a tremendous amount of contacts in the Waterville area and if you need something we probably have a contact in the field we could reach out to on your behalf. We are Maine people and we will get  through this , just like we have with other state wide disasters in the past, by leaning on each other and by counting on each of us to do our part. Thank you for doing your part and helping us do our part to bring some normalcy to the children.

March 27, 2020 - 10am - Good morning everyone,  I wanted to inform you that the Waterville Public Schools are changing the delivery schedule for meals such that we will be on the road Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting on Monday, March 30,2020. We will be able to deliver 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches  to each student on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and thus they will be covered for breakfast and lunch on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  If you know of someone who is 18 years old or younger please encourage them to participate in our meal delivery program.  In  normal times and especially during this difficult time we know how important proper nourishment is for every student. Yesterday we delivered 1,626 meals which is our high so far, let's serve even more next week by encouraging our neighbor's children who haven't participated before to start. I hope you are all well and getting by in these very difficult times. Together we will get through it, so stay strong, seek out help if you need it and remember the school is here for you. Please don't hesitate to call if we can do anything to help you. I can't wait to see your children, our students, entering the schools again but  only when it is safe to do so. Try to have a great week-end and hug your children an extra few times today and remember what a precious child each and every one is.

March 24, 2020 - 11am - Good morning all, as most of you probably know by now, the School Board at its meeting last night voted to extend the closure of Waterville Public Schools until April 27, 2020. Given this extended time it was decided by the administrative team this morning that we need to have a more formal plan for our learning expectations during this time. Building principals will be talking with their Leadership Teams today in regards to what this will look like for each school.   Thinking about the possibility that this closure could be longer we also decided that at grades 6-12 we would expect a second semester grade only i.e. no third quarter grade and no 4th quarter grade. In other words all the student work going forward would be done to obtain a second semester grade by the end of this school year. In grades K thru 5 we would expect a third trimester grade or standards completion assessment. Having never done this sort of thing before we know we will make mistakes and when we do we will have to back up and re-start or change direction but I have faith in my professional staff and this professionalism, effort and creativity will make this a worthwhile endeavor for your families and our students. Stay safe and stay well everyone.

March 18, 2020 - 4pm - Good afternoon Staff and Parents

Realizing how important food and nourishment is for children we have sought and received permission from the State Department of Education to distribute food using our normal bus runs during the school shut down. However please know that it may not be the normal bus number you are accustomed to. Starting tomorrow morning (Thursday, March 19, 2020) between  9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. buses will be traveling and stopping at all our bus stops to deliver both breakfast and lunch. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to ease the burden this epidemic has caused.  Please note that the buses will not start delivering until 9:00 a.m. which means they will not be at your bus stop as early as usual. Being that tomorrow is our first time doing this we do not know what time buses will be at each stop. Please keep watch for them and the buses will honk their horn at each stop. Meals will also be available at the GJMS and the WJHS for pickup if that is easier for you than using bus stops.

In addition to this the Alfond Youth and Community Center will be providing cubside meal service in Waterville at the AYCC, 126 North Street and Winslow at Fort Halifax on U S 201, Monday thru Friday from  4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Drive up to the volunteer server, stay in your vehicle, indicate the  number of meals you need and you will be handed that many individually boxed servings. Also available on Thursday and Friday at the Waterville location are weekend meal backpacks.

March 15, 2020 - 2pm - I am writing to inform you that Waterville Public Schools will be closed starting Monday, March 16 and will remain closed through Friday, March 27.  At that time, we will consider a decision on a potential longer closure based on the facts available. On Monday of this week, staff will report to work as usual and will participate in professional development activities so that we may provide the best possible distance learning opportunities for students. Please see the letter from Curriculum Director, Mary Boyle copied below.

This closure is in response to the call by medical professionals to implement practices of social distancing as we all work to minimize the spread of (COVID-19).  This closure is not the result of any suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our immediate community, though we know the virus is present in our state. We are taking this proactive approach out of an abundance of caution and in an effort to “flatten the curve” of COVID-19 cases in Maine.

We know distance learning will not fully replace the classroom settings that students experience each day.  We know there will be flaws with distance learning, but we are determined to continue to provide learning opportunities for all students, and we ask for your patience and flexibility as we work through this process.

Please be on the lookout for follow-up letters from your child’s principal. For students who receive special services, parents will be receiving information from our Co-Assistant Directors of Instructional Support, Tabatha King and Amy Benham.

Much more information will be forthcoming on this closure, but I wanted to communicate this news to you as soon as possible so you may begin planning for child care and other concerns that will be raised by this decision.

During this closure, we ask that you assist by minimizing group meetings of students and adults.  Practicing social distancing and good personal hygiene are the two greatest steps we can take to protect our community from the spread of COVID-19.

We will continue to stay in touch with you throughout these distance learning days.  We understand this is a time of great uncertainty, and we are here to support you and your children while at the same time doing our best to insure healthy practices for all in the community.

Thank you for your continued support of our students and our schools.

Sincerely,

Eric L. Haley

March 13, 2020 - Good morning everyone, the Waterville Public Schools leadership team met again this morning to discuss the recent developments and decisions made statewide to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Waterville Public Schools have made the following decisions that will take effect starting Monday, March 16, 2020:

A) All after school activities are cancelled for the foreseeable future. This includes, athletic practices, clubs meetings etc. There will be no late buses after school;

B) The use of Waterville Public Schools by outside groups are cancelled;

C) Evening adult education classes are cancelled

D) All non - essential meetings are cancelled;

E) As much as possible all essential meetings will be done online or by phone. Where physical meetings are required the setting will be set such that each individual has at least three feet of space from other participants;

F) Parent/Teacher conferences, scheduled for next week,  will only take place on line or by phone. There will be no parent/teacher physical meetings;

G) Parent drop-off and pick-up will be done at the front doors. Parents and Caregivers will not be allowed in the buildings. This restriction also applies to Before and After Care;

H) There will be no school assemblies or large group use of our buildings;

I) All buses will get extra sanitizing on a daily basis;

I will continue to update you at a minimum of once a week but probably more as new events and decisions are made. Folks, we all are in uncharted waters but our first priority is our staff and students health. These are not easy decisions to make but we feel strongly they are needed. Remember to take care of yourself and your loved ones, give up that good old Maine "have to go to work" ethic for once and stay home if you are sick. More to come as we work through this.

Eric Haley

Superintendent of Schools

March 12, 2020 - I know you have been following the spread of the coronavirus since we heard about its start in China. It is certainly something to take seriously and watch carefully. I want you all to know that the Waterville Public Schools Leadership Team has been watching this closely as well. We are fortunate that to date there are no documented cases in Maine but that certainly doesn't mean it won't get here.

Shelley Phillips our Facilities Director has ordered a more intense daily cleaning of all touchable surfaces at every school, even at the expense of not getting all of our custodial work done on a daily basis.

 Melanie LeCours - Lead Nurse has been in daily contact with the CDC and has been advising us through the medical issues associated with the coronavirus. Washing one's hands and covering your mouth when coughing is still the best advice for not contracting the flu or the coronavirus.

The Board of Education has discussed this situation and is prepared to take quick and drastic action if the need arises.

We will  continue to massage our plan and monitor  what is happening around the world, the USA and locally. We will keep you up to date on a regular basis.

March 4, 2020 - Important information from our Nursing Team regarding the Flu and the coronavirus.
